Doreen M. Hogle

Doreen is a principal at Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds with over 18 years of experience counseling universities, research institutions, hospitals, and biotechnology companies of all sizes, from start-ups to international pharmaceutical corporations, on all aspects of complex intellectual property portfolio management.

Doreen’s practice is focused in the areas of immunology, molecular biology, protein and nucleic acid chemistry, genetics, structural biology, chemistry, drug discovery, small molecule pharmaceuticals, metabolomics and medical devices. She counsels clients in strategic patent and trademark prosecution and enforcement internationally, as well as in the US. Doreen advises clients on patentability, patent validity, freedom-to-operate, interference and infringement matters. She has drafted and negotiated license agreements, technology transfer agreements, consulting and confidentiality agreements.

Doreen is a Past-President of the Boston Patent Law Association (BPLA) and a former co-chair the BPLA Biotechnology Committee. As a member of the BPLA Amicus Committee, she has co-written an Amicus Brief for the case Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings (dba LabCorp) v. Metabolite Laboratories, heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. She has also authored “Copyright for Innovative Biotechnological Research: An Attractive Alternative to Patent or Trade Secret Protection”, 5 high Tech. Law Journal 75 (1990). Doreen is a member of the American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association, the Licensing Executive Society and participates in the Association of University Technology Managers, and Women Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology. Doreen has consistently been voted a Massachusetts/New England Super Lawyer since 2004 and in 2008 was voted a Super Lawyer, Corporate Counsel.

Prior to law school, Doreen had extensive university and industrial research experience in the areas of clinical chemistry, protein chemistry, immunology and metabolic disorders. She developed immunoassay diagnostics for two pharmaceutical companies. She has co-authored six scientific publications and is a co-inventor on a U.S. patent covering an immunodiagnostic assay for lipoproteins. Doreen has also worked as a marketing specialist for a medical instrumentation/immunodiagnostic company.
