Laurence A. Shumway, Ph.D.

Laurence Shumway is an Associate with the firm and counsels his clients on all aspects of patent practice, focusing on patent preparation and prosecution in the areas of biotechnology, chemistry, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals.

Prior to joining the firm, Larry was a Technology Specialist in a large intellectual property law firm where he drafted and prosecuted U.S. patent applications and directed foreign counsel in prosecution of non-U.S. applications. He also assisted with due diligence analyses, including sequence searching and related freedom-to-operate analysis. Larry’s client base has included large, multi-national pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and high technology companies; small companies; and academic institutions.

As a Doctoral Student at Harvard University, Larry studied signal transduction, the DNA damage response, and genetics—including microarray-based linkage mapping of complex traits. Larry has over nine years of experience as a research scientist in areas such as computational biology, cell and molecular biology, flow cytometry, genetics and genomics, microarray technology, microbiology, and video microscopy.

Larry has co-authored peer-reviewed scientific publications and the title of his doctoral thesis was “Evolution and Characterization of Novel Signaling Behavior in Budding Yeast.” He has been honored with numerous campus and nation-wide competitive merit prizes, including a National Science Foundation graduate fellowship, the Congressional Goldwater scholarship, and the Pfizer and Bechman awards.
