Vivien J. Tannoch-Magin, Ph.D.

Vivien Tannoch-Magin brings her extensive intellectual property experience in biotechnology, chemistry and pharmaceutical areas to her clients. Following her Ph.D. at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in the U.K., Vivien completed two post-doctoral research fellowships: one at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and the other at LSU Medical School in New Orleans.

With her strong combination of scientific and IP experience, Vivien is able to effectively identify key aspects of her client’s technology and advances, and in turn, design the appropriate IP protection strategy to attain valuable IP assets for her clients. Vivien manages both modest and complex IP portfolios and provides the personal guidance to obtain an IP portfolio that aligns with the business goals of each individual client.

Since 2001, Vivien has worked with universities, small start-up companies and corporate clients in developing their IP portfolios, both in the U.S. and abroad. Vivien is experienced in all aspects of patent prosecution and portfolio management, including such issues as European patent opposition proceedings, interferences, and licensing.

Vivien’s experience also extends to IP litigation, including various aspects of discovery, claims for patent damages, negotiations and settlements. In addition, Vivien assists her clients by conducting IP due diligence to assess risks and strengths of a company’s IP portfolio for business and financial transactions. Vivien also assesses patentability, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity concerns for her clients, as well as performs inventorship assessments, pre-publication reviews, and manages regular Patent Committee company meetings.

SCIENTIFIC & TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
Vivien has in-depth scientific and technical experience, particularly in the fields of cancer and metastasis research, cardiovascular development, immunology, cell cycle control, neurodegenerative diseases and apoptosis. Her scientific research emphasized the use of molecular and cellular biology, genomics, antibody production and animal models. Specific areas of Vivien’s expertise include molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, genetics, drug screening, biomarkers, disease modeling, personalized medicine, detection of environmental agents, chemistry and biotechnology devices. 

Vivien has spoken at various panel discussions and presentations on topics such as IP protection for emerging companies, best practices in patent prosecution and IP due diligence. She is also the recipient of many awards, including the Anne G. and Edward R. Lefler Center Fellowship Award, Harvard Medical School; the Department of Medicine Postgraduate Scholar Award, University of Glasgow; and the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Department of Surgery award for meritorious scientific research.
