3-D printing technology has been around for many years, but the recent pandemic has shown how instrumental 3-D printing technology can be in healthcare and the medical device and industry. From nasal test swabs, to ventilator parts, to 3-D printed face shields, 3-D printing has been involved in assisting those on the front lines. In addition, a number of companies are using 3-D printing in research and development. Learn more about 3-D printing and how advances in the technology are enabling innovation, product development and small run manufacturing in the medical device industry.

Attendees learned about various 3-D printing technologies, their potential applications in the medical device industry, and how medical companies are using 3-D printing in their business.

Panelists:

Gaurav Manchanda is the Director of Healthcare of Formlabs.
Formlabs is a leading 3D printing technology developer and manufacturer.  Their 3D printers help enable clinicians, biomedical engineers, and medical device companies to create patient-specific preoperative planning models, orthoses, and surgical devices. Before Formlabs, Gaurav spent ten years advancing technologies to support public health and the practice of medicine around the world. Most recently, Gaurav founded One Degree Solar, an award-winning supplier of energy and technology solutions created specifically for health clinics and community health workers without access to electricity. Previously, he spent years in post-conflict Liberia as Special Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Health, a position sponsored by the Clinton Health Access Initiative. Gaurav has a degree in International Development and Technology Transfer from Tulane University and the School for International Training.

Park Mehendale is the Director of New Product Management of Conformis, Inc.
Conformis is a medical technology company that uses its proprietary technology platform to develop, manufacture, and sell patient-specific joint replacement implants (individually sized and shaped, or personalized, to fit each patient’s unique anatomy). Park supports manufacturing engineering efforts at Conformis for both the additive and reduction manufacturing processes on-site.

Dr. Nathan J. Castro is the Co-Founder and CTO of Nanochon LLC.
Nanochon is a medical device company developing 3D printed joint implants that aims to set new clinical standards for cartilage restoration.  Dr. Castro is an experienced biomedical researcher and entrepreneur having experience in the design, testing and regulatory approval of a vascular access medical device.  He is skilled in policy analysis, life sciences, data analysis, and quantitative research with particular interest in clinical translational (bench-to-bedside).  With domestic and international research appointments at well-recognized laboratories, Dr. Castro is always in search of and searching for impactful opportunities.

Dr. Ahmed Ghazi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he also serves as the Director of Simulation Training for the Department of Urology.
Dr. Ghazi received his medical education from Cairo University, Egypt, where he also completed his surgery training and Urology residency. Following his training he completed a series of worldwide fellowships in state-of-the-art minimal invasive Urological surgery, in Paris and Austria, where he received his accreditation from the European Board of Urology. He completed an Endourology and robotic surgery fellowship at the University of Rochester Medical Center, New York.  He has led a research laboratory staffed with a team of biomedical engineers to build personalized organ replicas based on radiologic imaging. These realistic innovative models of organs that feel, act and look like human organs enhance the efficiency, safety, and comprehensiveness of surgical training.
