The Week Long Visit Helped Massachusetts Companies Learn About European Patent Office Best Practices

Leading intellectual property law firm Hamilton, Brook, Smith & Reynolds, P.C. was asked to host the European Patent Office (EPO) during their week long visit to the Boston area for the purpose of exchanging perspectives between the EPO and patent practitioners.  John DuPré, President and Principal at Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds stated, “For the third time Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds was selected by the European Patent Office as their host.  We were delighted to invite them to visit with our innovative clients in the Boston area to meet with senior executives and build relationships with our Attorneys.  The visit was a beneficial experience for all those involved.”

European Patent Office presentationDuring the visit, a delegation of six guests from various EPO Directorates in the chemical and pharmaceutical fields visited with our clients to hear presentations on their latest technologies, meet with executives and tour of their facilities.  Pam Torpey, a Principal at Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds, remarked, “Each of the clients that the EPO guests met with has ambitions to build their European business.  This visit allowed them to ask company specific questions and connect with the EPO on a personal level.” 

On Thursday, September 27th, Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds hosted a presentation by the European Patent Office at the Westin Waltham Hotel on the topics of using U.S. applications as a basis for filing EP applications, problems and pitfalls of U.S. approaches, strategic and practical tips for implementing EP opposition procedures, third party observations and how to effectively prosecute EP patent applications directed to medical use and dosage regimen.  "This was a unique opportunity to learn firsthand from the EPO how to successfully and strategically prosecute critical patent applications before the EPO,” said Alice Carroll, Principal, Hamilton Brook Smith Reynolds.
